The reason bearings were reversed etc was because the bearings were pretty usless and would often lock up and unscrew pedals,cranks etc causing accidents remember they were fixed gears so no hope of cruising to a stop!
Modern bearings and grease/lubrication should not need to be reversed,but we all like things the way they and so have been reluctunt to change.(there's no left hand threads in cars they don't seem to unwind there threads bearings etc)
