"Spain’s decision to make airbag vests for motorcycle riders with high power mandatory from 2026 is a result of a serious accident between a motorbike, and a car.

If you’re one of those riders who loves the feeling of freedom on two wheels – wind in your face, endless roads ahead – there’s a big change coming your way. Spain’s traffic authority DGT has confirmed what many have been anticipating for months. From January 2026 motorcyclists on large bikes will be required to wear airbag vests when riding intercity roads. Spain is now on the same level as France and Italy for biker safety.
This is not a pretty story. DGT crunched the numbers and found that riding a motorcycle is still 12 times more dangerous than driving in a car. As much as we hate to be told what to think, this is a way to prevent families from receiving those dreaded telephone calls. Airbag vests are said to save lives. Maybe it’s about time that we all wore them.
Where will the Airbag Vest be required in Spain?
Clarify something. This new rule does not apply to every scooter that is ridden on city streets. It’s aimed at those with the A motorcycle licence—so, the folks on the big machines, not mopeds or little scooters. The city commuters are safe: the airbag requirement is only for open roads outside of town where most serious crashes occur. If you plan to take your full motorcycle licence, the airbag requirement is already on test day kit lists.

Price tags are not the cause for panic. There’s still over a year to get sorted, and the DGT has said 2025 will be all about information campaigns – plus, there might even be some financial help on offer to soften the blow. There’s a rumor that shops and brands may also lower their prices as everyone will need airbags in the near future."
