Ok - visto che sono uscite le mappe nuove, e sto tracciando dei percorsi da fare la prossima settimana ho chiesto direttamente a Garmin. E secondo quanto dice la chat di support, ha ragione Romargi:

garmin support person: Thank you, so that is indeed intended as it is the same as most of our other devices the maps preinstalled on the unit are locked to the unit they came on so to use them in basecamp to make routes you will need the device plugged in
er-minio: But this makes it significantly slower.
er-minio: The only solution then is to buy the maps separately?
garmin support person: so you can either use it with the device plugged in or to buy separate maps
er-minio: ok
er-minio: Hope Garmin changes its mind about this, as it is unpractical.

Altre persone hanno riportato risposte esattamente contrarie (quindi: bug) qui sul forum di supporto di Garmin dove parlano anche di ticket di supporto. Vedere qui e altri thread:

Se non è un bug, spero riconsiderino, perchè lavorare con il navi attaccato non è sempre pratico ed, inoltre, è MOLTO più lento dell'utilizzare la memoria interna del computer. E non parliamo nemmeno del cavo USB mini invece che C.
La cosa di cui ho paura è che stiano facendo questo in vista della migrazione da Basecamp a Express.
Spero si rendano conto che c'è gente che lavora/edita percorsi e tracce sul computer anche in posti dove non c'è connessione ad internet, oppure c'è ma è veramente lenta.
Vediamo.
Con le mappe non lifetime il problema non si pone.
Quindi come diceva Romargi qualche settimana fa, si, hanno rimaneggiato la licenza delle mappe.
