The first thing to say is that the third operation came as a result of the failure of the second intervention. In that second operation Marc was implanted with a bone from a corpse. The process that the doctors hoped would follow that implant did not take place. This led to the third surgery.
In this third try, the second metal plate was removed and a new plane was put into place. The need to generate critical bone calcification forced the doctors to implant in the surgical area bone chips from Marquez’s own body. To be effective they had to be vascularized, that is, from blood-irrigated bones. There aren’t that many in the human body.
Marc had these removed from his pelvis and fixed to the humerus. At the same time a coating, or kind of mesh, from one of Marc’s femurs was removed. This mesh around the femur keeps the bone vascularized. Part of this sheath was inserted around Marc’s humerus in order to assist the irrigation of the operated area, that is to say, help the needed regeneration of it.
